CALWEST LITTLE LEAGUE - MAJOR AMERICAN
DUGOUT DERBY 2026
TOURNAMENT REGUALTIONS, RULES & FORMAT
1st Round Pool Play
-
Every team will play 4 games throughout the tournament.
-
The 17 teams are divided into 4 pools, each team will play 2 preliminary round (pool play) games on Friday and Saturday.
-
Preliminary round games will also count toward regular season standings.

Rankings & Advancement
Tournament standings are calculated using the following ranking system:
-
Points: Win = 2, Tie = 1, Loss = 0
-
Lowest Defensive Differential (“Diff”)
-
Highest Runs For (RF)

Defensive Differential Formula
Diff = Runs Against (RA) ÷ Defensive Innings Played
This defensive metric is designed to reward strong, consistent defensive play throughout the tournament, rather than simply total runs allowed. Because teams may play different numbers of defensive innings due to home/away status or game situations, using defensive innings creates a more balanced comparison across all teams.
Important Notes
-
Lower “Diff” values rank higher.
-
Defensive innings are tracked and submitted for every game.
-
Accurate score reporting is important, as the team rankings update directly from submitted game results.
-
Standings and rankings will update automatically on the tournament website approximately 5 - 10 minutes after scores are submitted. If you are not seeing the games appear after the 5 - 10 mintues, make sure you're refreshing your web browser, using a new browsing session or an incognito session.

Sunday: Playoff Round Brackets
-
All teams will continue into Sunday games based on rankings after pool play.
-
Sunday matchups and game times will be finalized once Saturday games are complete.
-
Teams may play at different locations Sunday depending on advancement and scheduling. The tournament co-ordinator will both alert coaches and update the tournament schedule with Sunday's game times when they become available after all games finalize on Saturday.

Pitch Counts & Catcher Tracking
Official pitch counts must be reviewed and confirmed by both teams at the conclusion of every game to help avoid disputes and ensure player eligibility is accurately tracked throughout the tournament.
In addition to pitchers, catcher usage will also be recorded. Per Little League regulations, any player who catches 4 or more innings in a game is not eligible to pitch on the same calendar day. Because of this, accurate catcher tracking is important and must be reported with final game submissions.
Pitch count data, required rest days, and player eligibility information will be updated throughout the tournament in the Coaches Corner section of the website.

The Away team will occupy the third base dugout
and will provide an official pitch counter. Each coach is ultimately responsible for the pitch count.
-
Pitching - Little League Regular Season Pitching Rules (as outlined completely in Regulation VI of the 2026 rule book) will be adhered to as per Little League Alberta mandate. All teams MUST verify their player's pitching eligibility entering the tournament, during the tournament through the use of the Tournament Pitching Control Sheet, and upon exiting the tournament all Little League teams returning to regular season play in their own leagues must also observe required days of rest for their pitchers.
-
Any player on a regular season team may pitch. (NOTE: There is no limit to the number of pitchers a team may use in a game.
-
A pitcher once removed from the mound cannot return as a pitcher.
-
The Coaches must remove the pitcher when said pitcher reaches the limit for his/her age group as noted below, but the pitcher may remain in the game at another position, except for catcher
Pitch Limits

limits are determined by the player’s league age (not their division).
The CWLL objective is to ensure players have the opportunity to build the strength and stamina necessary to pitch safely and effectively. To encourage proper arm strength and durability, the following pitch limits apply to ALL pitchers:
Early Season Pitch Limits:
1st Appearance of the season - Max 35 pitches
2nd Appearance of the season - Max 50 pitches
3rd Appearance of the season - See age maximums listed below
Pitch Limits: (3rd Appearance and on...)
League Age 8: Max 50 pitches/day
League Age 9-10: Max 75 pitches/day
League Age 11-12: Max 85 pitches/day

Double Headers: A player may not pitch in two games in a single day regardless of the number of pitches thrown

Pitcher-to-Catcher

Catcher-to-Pitcher
Mandatory Days Rest (ALL DIVISIONS)

*For example, a player that throws 36 pitches on Friday will not be eligible to pitch again until Monday

Exception: If a pitcher reaches the pitch count limit for his/her league age while facing a batter, the pitcher may continue to pitch to that batter until any one of the following conditions occurs:
-
That batter reaches base;
-
That batter is put out;
-
The third out is made to complete the half-inning.

Pitch Logs: Both teams must track pitch counts. Please ensure the official pitch counts are reviewed by both coaches at the end of every game to avoid disputes.

-
The pitch count recorder must provide the current pitch count for any pitcher when requested by either manager or any umpire. However, the manager is responsible for knowing when his/her pitcher must be removed.
-
The official pitch count recorder should inform the umpire-in-chief when a pitcher has delivered his/ her maximum limit of pitches for the game, as noted above. The umpire-in-chief will inform the pitcher's manager that the pitcher must be removed. However, the failure by the pitch count recorder to notify the umpire-in-chief, and/or the failure of the umpire-in-chief to notify the manager, does not relieve the manager of his/her responsibility to remove a pitcher when that pitcher is no longer eligible.

Weather Policy

Inclement weather can present hazards to participants in a variety of scenarios. Given our location in North America, typical concerns faced by participants include lightning, excessive rain, low temperatures, snow, and in recent years, air quality. It isimportant for participants to recognize that weather conditions can vary in what appearto be small distances between fields. CWLL will support the decision of Coaches and Managers to cancel games under appropriate circumstances. However, the decision to cancel a game prior to its start due to weather conditions must be made by the Coaches in the game based on the actual conditions at the field where they're going to play. For the tournament, once a game has started, the decision to proceed, delay or call a game due to unsafe weather conditions will be the responsibility of the respective team’s Head Coach, the tournament co-ordinator or the CalWest safety officer. All coaches shall refer to weather information including Internet web sites specifically providing weather warnings, lightning reports for the Calgary area.
Lightning
Thunderstorms and lightning are always a possibility while participating in CWLL activities. Every thunderstorm produces lightning, and in turn, produces the risk of a lightning strike to your home and yourself. Depending on the time of year and atmospheric conditions, thunderstorms can happen with little to no warning. As a result, we recommend all participants be educated and proactive in identifying ways to prepare and mitigate the risk and protect themselves against the
dangerous and deadly effects of lightning. Prior to participating in any CWLL event, CWLL recommends the following:
-
Check the weather using the Government of Canada weather tracker below.
-
Be vigilant if the forecast calls for thunderstorms
-
Move inside to shelter (not a dugout) or your vehicle if you hear thunder. All baseball activities should be immediately suspended.
-
If you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, move indoors. All baseball activities should be immediately suspended
-
If choosing to wait out a storm, wait at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder is heard
-
If seeking shelter at the baseball diamond, do not remain in dugouts. This is because lightning can travel along metal wires or rebar in these structures.
-
Avoid contact with water during a thunderstorm.
